Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post

Celebrate the Small Things

Every Friday it’s time to Celebrate the Small Things!

  • I’m celebrating our new smoker/grill I found yesterday!  I’m glad it wasn’t too late in the season to find one.  Put it through the curing process today.

August 8 grill

Tomorrow we’ll have salmon burgers and then Sunday I’ll be doing chicken and sausage with corn on the cob from a local farm vendor.  Sweet.

  • We had an impromptu midweek campfire a couple of days ago.

August 6 fire

I so enjoy our campfire evenings, quiet time spent together sitting by the fire or rummaging around for more twigs.  Hubby spoiled me with this unplanned evening and he has been prepping for this weekend by splitting logs today.

Guess I’m celebrating a laid-back lifestyle and an awesome husband!

  • I am also celebrating and giving thanks for having doctors here who are people and not just clinicians.  They – referring to my medical doctor and my surgeon – actually listen to me and treat not just the medical condition, but me as a person.  Awesome.  These days, that is certainly something to celebrate, eh?

Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post

Celebrate the Small Things

Here it is Friday again and time to Celebrate the Small Things!

  • Today I am celebrating the fact that the weekly laundry task is done, so I have the weekend cleared of that chore.  Well, it does say we can celebrate small things, right?  Of course, every week I am grateful we have a washer/dryer set here and I don’t have to go a laundromat.  As a full-time RVer, that is a big thing!

  • We had a totally awesome storm one night recently.  There wasn’t much in the way of rainfall or wind, but that was the second fiercest display of thunder and lightning I have ever witnessed, vying in intensity with one I experienced in 2005, in Washington, DC.  It was dark out, but every few seconds was bright as daylight with lightning.  The thunder would boom and roll across the countryside for several seconds.  I am celebrating the fact that we didn’t incur a direct strike here and only lost power off and on.

July 13 Maggie morning

  • Never distressed by thunder or lightning (or fireworks), the above storm was the first time our Maggie showed signs of unease and restlessness.  We were all a bit on edge, I think.  Even after getting into bed, I got up and dressed again after a while just because it was so crazy out.  She was sick the next morning, and I am celebrating and grateful that this was a one-off occurrence and not a repeat of her illness back in May.

So there you have it – my celebrations this week!

Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post

Celebrate the Small Things

Another week has just about flown by and I find that it is time to Celebrate the Small Things!

  • If you read my previous entry, you would know that this past Saturday I celebrated being two years out from a second cancer diagnosis.  Yay!  That is definitely not a small thing.  Carpe diem!
  • Thanks to social media, I recently reconnected with a gal I met while we were workamping in Missouri during the Winter of 2010.  She and her husband were parked next to us during those miserable couple of months.  One does meet some good people in this lifestyle.  That is certainly cause for celebration!

Parked right on a lake, it was cold and windy – December 2010

  • I celebrate the fact that certain songs can cause my soul to soar.

Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post

Celebrate the Small Things

Guess I’m trying to make up missing last Friday by composing this entry Thursday evening.  Now if I can remember to post it tomorrow . . .

  • Tonight I’m celebrating the gift of Eagle making a fly-by directly over me this afternoon.

  • This afternoon I visited my hair stylist for a cut.  Ahhh . . . that feels better!  At every appointment with her I celebrate the fact that it is a relaxing experience, she and I have a comfortable relationship ongoing now for over three years, and I can emerge from the shop lookin’ good.  Catherine is a good-hearted and talented young woman, coming here to me to cut my hair during the interval between my cancer surgeries two years ago . . . and not charging me for the visit.  She works from a salon a 30-minute drive from here through the countryside now, having moved there from a salon about five minutes from here earlier this year.  No surprise that I followed her when she transferred.

  • Although I marvel at and celebrate the man who is my husband, I’ll mention tonight that I am fortunate to be married to someone who understands,  supports and encourages my idea of a solo retreat weekend on my own.  I’m considering taking a weekend to myself in the near future and am looking at renting a wee cottage or cabin not far from here.  I’m looking at Lancaster or Gettysburg, PA and in the Poconos.  I envision a weekend of writing, meditating and napping.  Throughout my life, I have been an independent gal, taking road trips on my own, tent camping solo and so forth.  We are together essentially 24/7 and it has been several years since I have ventured out on my own.  Perhaps it’s time to do so again, just to stay in practice!  At any rate, I am celebrating having a supportive partner.

What are you celebrating today?

Thanks for stopping by!

Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post - No. 6

Celebrate the Small Things

Is it Friday already?  Well, then, it must be time to Celebrate the Small Things!

July 4 Maggie new harness

  • Today I am celebrating the finding of a certain type of harness for our dog Maggie.  It’s the only design I have run across that she can’t “Houdini” out of given the opportunity.  I wasn’t even on a mission to find one as I have been in the past; it just happened as an afterthought.  I have found them at Petco and Walmart, but had not seen one in ages.  In Walmart this afternoon picking up some provisions, my little voice said, “Check down the dog aisle.  Maybe there’s a harness.”  Sure enough, there it was.  Just one, just her size and pink, no less.  Score!

  • You know, I celebrate our wee Maggie every day.  She is such a treasure, a rescue from an Austin, TX shelter in 2010, a few months prior to our hitting the road as full-timers.  She is smart as can be, always smiling, always in a grand mood, happy to just be with us.  Such a trouper, she has bravely been with us through not only our travels but two hurricanes, blizzards and Superstorm Sandy.  My little bundle of joy, my sleeps-all-night-in-the-same-spot doggie, my funny midlife doggie.

On patrol

  • After enduring a few days of absolutely oppressive weather conditions this past week (it was so humid out one could actually see the hazy moisture in the air), I have certainly been celebrating today’s conditions!  Following the front that passed through yesterday evening, we have had highs in the 70s and a light breeze with lows projected in the 50s overnight.  Bliss.  Absolute bliss.

Celebrate the Small Things - A Blog Hop Post - No. 4

Celebrate the Small Things

It’s Friday and time once again to Celebrate the Small Things!

Not only does Friday herald the end of the week, but also celebration!  I’m a bit late getting this post done, Wednesday and Thursday being focused on upgrading our network router and the resultant cascade effect.  Oh the joys of technology!

HP Envy 4500 in service 06192014

Meet “Hal,” new addition to the office

  • I am most definitely celebrating having set up the new router  and getting all our devices online.  Our wireless printer was a few generations old, so new router ended up meaning new printer.  That ended up with a all-day event of wearing my geek IT “hat” getting all our devices online.  Dave’s laptop refused to communicate with the new printer, etc.  I am celebrating having accomplished all this without consulting outside technical support!

June 20 Lilies

  • I am celebrating the fact that these lilies finally bloomed!  They had been on the verge of opening for several days and have arrived at last!  This is their third year of coming back annually and I’m proud of them for doing so.

  • Once again I’m doing the Happy Dance because of the weather here in NW New Jersey.  Today’s high is to be around 76F and was in the mid 50s last night.  That’s grand sleeping weather, especially in an RV with a window open.

January 9, 2013 - Beginnings Blogfest

Beginnings Blogfest 2013

Reading blogs on my list this morning, I found out about the Beginnings Blogfest which happens today!  Yikes!

Any beginning is fair game, but I think I’ll share with you how I entered the realm of blogging.  This is also a tale of the beginnings of a new life with my beloved Scotsman and how I came to call Scotland my second country.  It is also a tale of self-discovery as a Writer.  So cozy up, and I’ll tell you a story, albeit a wee bit over the length of a typical blog entry.  I apologize for that, but hope you’ll walk with me a while.  Apparently this is what I do; I tell stories.

~~~~~~~~~
Back in November 2005, I accompanied my then fiancé (now husband) Dave to his homeland of Scotland.  He had proposed over the phone in April of that year, again in person in June (in Washington, D.C. where we met for the first time, but that’s a whole ‘nuther story)  and was back in the States for a visit in October.  We had started the paperwork process to acquire a Fiancé Visa for his immigration to the States, and the plan was for me to travel to Scotland to be with him during the interviews for said visa.  Things were moving along more swiftly in that regard than we had anticipated; therefore, we decided that I would travel back with him instead of waiting and going over on my own.
I had other reasons for making a prolonged trip to Scotland.  I wanted to meet Dave’s two grown sons and hopefully get to know them and they know me.  I wanted to see what makes Dave, Dave . . . his homeland, his culture, his life.  I also wanted to see if I could live in Scotland should, heaven forbid, his visa be denied.
I stayed with Dave at his flat in Dunfermline (near Edinburgh) from November 2005 until our return to the States together in February 2006.
So there I was, about to travel 4000 miles on my first trip abroad after spending just shy of three weeks with this man to whom I was engaged.  Although well-traveled in the USA, I was a virgin at traveling abroad.  “Will my ATM card work there?”  “Yes, darlin’, we even have indoor plumbing and electricity!”  Ha!
My family and friends (as they had done when I announced our engagement) were saying, or at least thinking, “You’re going to do what??”  Needless to say, I know they had concerns even though they had met Dave during his visit.  “What if things don’t work out?” they might ask.  “Well, I have a return ticket.  I’ll just change the date and come home.  I’m a big girl.”
(Many months later after we had returned to the States, I learned from my aunt that during a farewell hug at the airport, Dave whispered in her ear, “Don’t worry.  I’ll take care of her.”)
Taking a leave of absence from my job as a home-based medical transcriptionist, for the first time in my adult life I was not working.  Dave resumed his work routine as a pipefitter for the Royal Navy at the Rosyth Dockyard.  Although we took long-weekend trips around Scotland to Loch Ness, Glencoe in The Highlands and other amazing places, I had time on my hands to do as I pleased.  I kept up the house, laundry and marketing.  (It’s amazing how many groceries you can put in a backpack!)  I hopped a double-decker bus and went “up town” into Dunfermline and prowled shops, the library, the Glen (a park) and just soaked up the atmosphere by walking, walking, walking.  I took thousands of photographs with a new camera purchased for this adventure.
There were many hours, however, when I was cozied up in Dave’s flat (condo) with time on my hands.  For the first time, I could allow my creativity to emerge, and I met my Muse.
What better way to let family and friends know that I was okay and to share my experiences than to blog?  Not only could I  share my thoughts, feelings, photographs and experiences at the time, but would have a record of this adventure for myself in days and years to come.
So I set up a blog on MSN Spaces and began documenting my Scotland experience.  That site no longer exists, but I did migrate it to Wordpress prior to the demise of the MSN blog hosting venue.  I maintained that blog until we began transitioning to our lives as full-time RVers, at which time I began Phoenix Once Again.
The text of my Scotland blog is still available at Journeys Through Scotland and Beyond, sans the photos that were part of the original site.  My Scotland chronicles begin in November 2005.
Free of job and many everyday responsibilities, I was essentially on a three-month vacation or, as it turns out, somewhat of a writer’s retreat.  I discovered the joy and release of putting my internal thoughts and emotions into an external form and sharing that with others.
I became a Writer, although I really did not acknowledge that at the time.
~~~~~~~~~

Thank you for taking the time to listen to my tale.  I have a dream of putting together a compilation of such stories of self-discovery, lessons and insights gained from Life as a Reiki Master/Teacher, a two-time cancer survivor, full-time RVer and survivor of Life.  This project is currently in development; however, if you found pleasure or interest in the above tale and would like to hear more, I sure could use your encouragement with my WIP (work in progress).

October 3, 2012 - Insecure Writers Support Group

Welcome to some new followers in September!  Thank you so much for joining up and for your kind comments!

InsecureWritersSupportGroup

Wow!  It’s already been another month and time for another post as part of the Insecure Writers Group.

September was another month whose focus was on healing from my surgeries this summer.

I am thinking in a more creative direction a bit more frequently, so I suppose one could call that progress towards some serious writing again.

I did participate in a blog hop in September, The Follow-Swap Blog Hop sponsored by Katherine at Beyond the Hourglass Bridge.

Still, I just don’t feel emotionally, physically and creatively  ready to settle down to work.

Dave and I have been enjoying campfires in the evenings as often as practical and right now I’m soaking that up – enjoying our time together in the evenings tending the fire and talking; before long Winter will be here and campfires will be over for this year.

I’m back at work more (we are an on-site security team at a former paper mill, having this property and two others under our responsibility).  Yesterday, for instance, was very hectic with some issues and visitors to the property.

One of the issues is a black bear roaming the property and even being sighted inside the mill!  Yesterday the Fish and Wildlife warden delivered a bear trap with the hopes in relocating the bear.

Additionally, our wee dog Maggie underwent surgery yesterday for removal of bladder stones.  Once she was home last evening and today, I have spent my day with her monitoring her progress and tending to her.  She’s doing fine, drinking and eating today, but still in a bit of discomfort and needing assistance in and out of our RV, etc..

My life is full and good.  I know my Muse is waiting patiently and that we will spend some quality, fun time together in the near future!

Thanks ever so much for stopping by!

September 24, 2012 - A Blog Hop!

You may have noticed things have been a wee bit quiet here the past couple of months.  That’s what appendicitis, a cancer diagnosis and two surgeries will do to one’s writing schedule and inclination.  I’m reentering the world a bit more every day and happened to find this mentioned on my friend Donna’s site My Write Spot.

Throwing all caution (and projects I planned for this morning) to the wind, I have jumped in!  I hope you will visit Katherine’s site at Beyond the Hourglass Bridge to see what it’s all about and visit the participating sites.  Thanks, Katherine, for sponsoring this fun project.

Okay, I’m off to check out some blogs!

Thanks for stopping by!  Now go write!

Baby’s Gift - A Dog’s Love

IMG_0021

It had been raining steadily all week in my Houston, Texas neighborhood. The dirty, soaked-to-the-skin, brown dog took shelter beneath the motorhome parked along the curb at the end of the street. Seemingly frightened of its own shadow, it returned to the bit of dry comfort provided under the motorhome after running in sheer terror from monsters such as the city garbage truck. Each day my heart broke just a bit more with the pitiful scene unfolding.

Living with someone who had never had a dog (we were a cat household) and who expressed disinterest in ever coexisting with a canine, the decision I made was to hopefully gain enough of the dog's trust to get it to the shelter. If I was successful, at least this pup would have a chance at a loving home.

Approaching the motorhome slowly with food, I kept my voice soft with, “It's okay, baby, it's all right. Don't be afraid, baby, sweetie.” After leaving food within her reach, she would eat only after I backed away and came no closer. A few days of this routine and . . . she followed me hesitantly down the street back to my house. Once there, I sat on the street curb, constantly talking softly to her . . . “Hi, baby, it's okay. Hey, sweetie, aren't you a sweet baby.” Before long, she was in my lap, in my heart and in my home.

She was young, perhaps six months old when she entered my life during that rainy week in October 1997. Baby was essentially healthy with the exception of a blown left pupil from blunt head trauma; she bore a slight scar above her eye all her years. With me until February 2010, her health was excellent. The only vet visits were routine check-ups.

Snapshots from Our Life Together

  • Baby never tore up anything excepting the box of Junior Mints she procured from my home-office desk during those early days. “Oh no!  The dog ate a box of chocolate!  Chocolate can kill a dog!”  The only aftereffect was her having minty-fresh breath for days!  A few years later, she also cleaned a plate of banana bread when silly me went to the kitchen for a few minutes and left the plate on a coffee table.

  • Countless tears fell to her fur during my cancer experience and the dark times following the dissolution of my previous marriage.

  • Ours was a cat-and-dog household; however, the cats were there first.  I wondered what Baby’s reaction would be when I introduced two young kitty brothers to the mix.  Her reaction?  “Mom!!  You brought me kitties!”  Gentle and tolerant as always, she allowed them to play with her, perform “sneak attacks” on her and welcomed them as her little brothers.

  • Baby was always my protector and guardian.  During my move from Texas to Minnesota, there was one hotel she apparently did not like.  She slept across the hotel room door threshold, refusing to hop into bed with me or budge from her spot at all until the next morning.

  • In all the Reiki classes I taught, Baby was right there with me greeting students, sitting in the circles with us and allowing students to practice their Reiki techniques on her.  During one class, as I came to the end of the row of students receiving their attunements, there sat Baby!  She was telling me she was ready.  She received her Reiki II Practitioner attunements that weekend.

  • The Thanksgiving Baby and I went camping, my first solo outing with a new tent, my first solo camping experience period, she did not laugh as I erected that big tent but only politely grinned, although I don’t know that I can say the same for campers at neighboring sites.   Sitting together by the campfire at night, she quietly said “Boof” as folks strolled by on the road, alerting them to her presence and me to theirs while not making a disturbing “Yap yap yap” like other dogs in the campground.

  • When I spent three months in Scotland with Dave prior to our marriage, Baby boarded at a sled dog facility in Minnesota.  Upon returning to pick her up, I wondered about my reception after leaving her that long (she had been boarded for a night or two on various occasions during previous years).  When she recognized my whistle, her handler released her lead and she bounded through the snow, knocking me down with her hugs and kisses.  I will never forget that joyous homecoming!

Baby’s Gift

Dave had never lived with a dog.  He knew right from the get it was “Love me; Love my dog.”  Baby adored him from the first meeting; all girls love a Scottish brogue, eh?  It seemed through the years that Dave “tolerated” her for my sake.  After all, she was “my” dog; we had the history together.

Baby had aged quite a bit in the last couple of years.  The sight in her good eye was shadows only and her hearing was virtually gone; she could “lose” me in the same room.  She was not in pain, but she was not enjoying life as before.  She was having trouble getting around, her hips and legs giving out now and then.

For weeks I struggled with the decision.  Was it time?  There is no turning back once it is done.  What should I do?  Was she ready to go?  Was I ready to give her up?

IMG_0035

Having had to make similar decisions throughout my life, I told myself, yes, it was time.  She had given me so much – all of her love, compassion, joy and protection – I owed her more than the indignity of a slow death by infirmity.

I made the phone call to our vet and arranged to be there the next day following work.  When I told Dave, the tears came for him.  For the next 24 hours, I believe he “saw” Baby for the first time, realizing the love he had for her and acknowledging her adoration of him.  Staying strong for her, I encouraged him to do the same in her presence so she would not be upset.

Dave had never been with any living creature at its passing from this world.  In the exam room at the vet the next afternoon, we had Baby’s cushy bed, her blankie, her favorite “fluffy,” a candle burning with the lights turned down and a Reiki music CD playing.  Dave, the vet and I quietly talked to Baby and loved on her.  The drug coursing through her veins to stop her tired, devoted and courageous heart reached its goal and, as throughout her life when relaxed and drifting into The Dreamtime, her last breath was a simple, contented sigh.

At that last breath, I lost it.  No longer putting up the strong “front” for my Baby-Dog, the tears showered her Shepherd-like coat and I cried out her name.  At these words even today,  I am misty-eyed.

I hear you saying, “Okay, what was Baby’s Gift, already?”

Her gift was her love, not just for me, for I have known before the  unconditional and devoted love of a Dog.

No, Baby’s Gift was to Dave, for he had never known what it is to be loved by a Dog and had never loved a Dog.

IMG_0014

As we left the vet clinic, Dave remarked that Baby’s passing was “beautiful,” and indeed it was.  He also said, “We could get another dog sometime . . .”

Baby was cremated and some of her ashes spread on the property of friends near Brenham, Texas, where I lived for many years and which I still consider “home.”  We had a wee life celebration for her . . .

IMG_1859

Dave, me and Maggie at Baby’s Life Celebration – April 2010

IMG_1843

That summer, friend Sue told me “Baby’s Spot” was a beautiful carpet of Texas Bluebonnets with all the recent rain.

Baby loved to travel and camp, so the rest of her is with us as we travel and work as full-time RVers.  Dave has said he would like to sprinkle some of her ashes in The Highlands of Scotland on our next visit.

Curious about Maggie shown in the above photo?  Our Marvelous Maggie joined the Barnes clan about a month or two following Baby’s passing.  Dave and I truly believe she was guided to us by Baby, as our Maggs is a total joy and blessing.  Friends at Baby’s life celebration remarked it seemed as if Maggie knew what we were doing; she was quiet, respectful and loving of everyone there.

I know these blog entries should be short; however, this one is what it is, and I thank you for staying with me all the way through.  I’ll try to behave from now on . . .

Thanks for stopping by!  Now go write!

June 30, 2012 - How We Met Blog Hop

Reading about the How We Met Blog Hop on My Write Spot today, I decided to jump in!

“Dating” on the Internet, phone and via postal mail in 2004 – and Dave’s marriage proposal on the phone in Spring 2005 - we met in person for the first time at the airport in Washington, D.C. in June 2005.  I was there as a survivor advocate for the Lance Armstrong Foundation; Dave came over to share those few days.

Our Internet meeting was pure karma and a casual friendship at first, swiftly becoming something we both recognized as deep and enduring.

awwwwww!
